How to Make Your Own Organic Kale Chips!

Kale ChipsI have fallen into the kale chip craze, and I may need a rehabilitation program to get over how amazing this snack is. I wasn’t sure if I would be a fan of the crispy version of the bitter “super food,” so I journeyed to my local grocery store to purvey their selection of kale chips.

One brand was a curry flavor and did not look appetizing. Next, I found a vegan cheese version called Brad’s Raw Leafy Kale Chips. This one looked yummy, plus they were on sale, so those came home with me. As I was cooking dinner that night, I popped open the box and started munching on these leafy chips … and to my surprise, they were delicious! I was surprised by the flavor and how addicting they were. I nearly ate the entire box while making dinner!

While I was impressed with this crispy delights, I was not impressed with the price tag of nearly $8 per 2.5 ounce box. So, I did what any modern urban hippie girl does … she makes her own. Now, this was my first stab at it. I’m sure I could improve the recipe, finagle with with type of kale leaf, change up the spice blend, but I have to say … I am pleased with my first batch, and have been happily munching on my green crisps ever since.

What you will need:

  • one bunch of organic kale, any kind
  • olive oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • garlic powder
  • smoked paprika
  • nooch
  • cooling racks

The Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees F
  2. Wash kale leave thoroughly. Trim off large stems/ends. Dry leaves as best you can.
  3. I left my leaves whole since I have a very curly kale to work with. But you could tear the leaves into more bite sized-pieces.
  4. Put kale into a large bowl and drizzle with a bit of olive oil. It does not take a lot of oil to give the kale a good coating.
  5. Lay your leaves out in a single layer on the cooling racks.552
  6. Sprinkle with desired spices. I did two difference versions: 1. salt, pepper, nooch 2. salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, tiny bit-o-nooch.
  7. Put the racks of kale into the oven for 2-3 hours. I think about 2.5 hours was the best for my chips … just keep an eye on them. You can check for done-ness by sampling a small edge. You want them crisp, but not too crisp.560

I will have to say – both flavors are phenomenal, and you can come up with a million more flavor combinations.

This is something that you can easily make while you’re studying, cleaning the house, or just relaxing for the evening.

Creamy Avocado Spread/Dip (Vegan)

Ever on the search for a better breakfast alternative, I dreamed up this creation to satisfy my desire to eat more avocados, as well as an alternative for a breakfast/snack/dip that was savory, but not unhealthy.

Avocados are so good for you: according to californiaavocado.com “Avocados provide nearly 20 essential nutrients, including fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins and folic acid. They also act as a “nutrient booster” by enabling the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha and beta-carotene and lutein, in foods that are eaten with the fruit.”

There’s the facts … here’s the spread:

What you will need:

  • 1-2 avocados
  • a drizzle olive oil
  • lemon/orange juice
  • a splash of dairy-free milk (optional)
  • spices: salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika

The Method:

  1. Half the avocados and scoop out the flesh into a food processor. (I used 1.5 small avocados)
  2. Pulse until it starts to get creamy. 562
  3. Add the lemon/orange juice, a drizzle of olive oil, and the spices of your choice. Pulse until creamy.561
  4. If it is still really thick, you can thin it with the diary-free milk, or the olive oil.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Spread onto toast for a great breakfast or snack. 
  • Spread onto a sandwich in place of mayonnaise.
  • Put into a bowl for dipping chips or veggies.

Natural Face Wash – Oil Cleansing Method

I’ve had clear skin, a few pimples, and hormonal acne … and most store-bought face washes just dried out my skin. For me, I think this dry skin contributed to the pimple outbreaks, and I needed a better solution to this issue. In a Facebook post by my friend, Sarah B., she mentioned she used oil to clean her face. I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but it makes sense if you’ve ever read about oil cleansing.

I thought I would give this a shot. To my surprise, it does get your face clean. I have fewer pimples, and my face feels moisturizerized … which is pretty good for living in the arid high desert.

What you’ll need:

  • A container
  • olive oil
  • castor oil
  • tea tree oil (optional)

I do a 80/20 mix. So 80% of the bottle is olive oil, and 20% is castor oil. I just eye it … measurements here. I then add a few drops of the tea tree oil (which helps clear up pimples). This will also take off your make-up. Win, win!

How to use:

  • Have a  wash cloth ready to use.
  • Before I wash my hair, I pour a quarter-size pool of the oil in my hand, rub my hands together, and then gently rub all over my face.
  • I take my wash cloth (with my eyes closed), and run the wash cloth under hot water, and place the wash cloth over my face to open up to pores.
  • After about 30 seconds, I take the wash cloth and start gently wiping the oil off my face.
  • There will be a light film of oil left on your face. This is a great moisturizer, no need to wipe it all the way off.
  • I then shower as normal.
  • I do this before I wash my hair, just in case I get the oil in my hair … so I don’t go out of the house with oily roots.

DIY All-Natural 5 Minute Body Wash!!!

When I began my mission to eliminate chemicals and toxins from my household that also included the products I used on my body. It’s scary to think about all the things we put on our skin (our largest organ) which we have been lulled into complacency to believe are safe. Instead of putting {insert long list of unnatural synthetic carcinogenic ingredients here}, I decided to do a lil digging to see what other’s are doing. My friend Sarah B. had recently posted on facebook a picture of homemade body products. I asked her if she would share her recipes with me, and she was kind enough to do so.

At first, it was hard to get used to the natural body wash – it was not gel-like like the products you would buy at the store. BUT!!! I instantly felt better about what I was using. It left me feeling clean and slightly moisturized. I always disliked how store bought body wash made my skin feel stripped of all its natural oils. My sweetie and I use this everyday. One bottle lasts us about two weeks.

So, without further adieu here is my adaption of Sarah B.’s recipe:

What you will need:

Directions:

  1. Make sure your container is big enough to handle
    a
    ll the ingredients, or adjust the recipe up or down to meet the needs of your container.
  2. Insert funnel into the top of your container. This makes it much easier to pour the ingredients in your bottle.
  3. Pour the warm water in the container
  4. Melt the coconut oil if it is hardened (10 second increments in the microwave or on the stovetop in a double boiler)
  5. Pour coconut oil, soap, and olive oil in the container.
  6. Shake!
  7. Go take a shower and try it out.

Note on the oil:  you can use whichever oil works best for your skin type. I have noticed that the coconut oil can cause a build up in the bathtub. I have recently changed to using only olive oil, or sometimes half olive oil and half almond oil. You could use any oil that is liquid at room temperature. Oils that are hard, such as shea butter, cocoa butter, and even coconut oils may not incorporate uniformly, may clump, and may leave residue in your bath tub and possibly clog your drain.  Oils that I would use: olive, jojoba, almond, and hemp
